But there's a version of the sustainability conversation that I find exhausting: the one where individual choices are either the whole solution or completely pointless, depending on who's talking. The truth is somewhere more boring and more useful. Small habits only work if they're easy enough to actually do. And most reusable bottles quietly fail this test.

I own three. One is a 1L stainless steel thing I bought at a hiking store four years ago. It's excellent. It's also so heavy that I leave it at home whenever I'm not specifically Going On A Walk, which is most days. The second is a branded one from a conference that I use for the tap water on my desk. The third is the one I actually carry.

The gap between intentions and outcomes

Here's the scenario that breaks most people's plastic-free ambitions: you're running late, your bag is already full, your bottle is on the kitchen counter because you were going to add it but then the thing happened and now you're on the metro and there's a vending machine at the station and fine, just this once.

It's not a values problem. It's a friction problem.

Single-use plastic bottles exist because they're frictionless. You see them, you need water, you buy one. Any reusable option that competes with this has to be frictionless in a different way: easy enough to bring that you bring it without thinking, present enough in your bag that you reach for it before you reach for your wallet.

A bottle that collapses flat when empty is one of the few product designs that actually solves this. It's not heavy. It doesn't take up space when you don't need it. The consequence of bringing it is almost nothing, so you bring it.

What the numbers actually look like

The average person in Spain buys somewhere around 130 litres of bottled water per year, according to data from ANFACO and various packaging industry reports. That's roughly 260 half-litre bottles if you're buying the small ones at a kiosk or vending machine, or fewer if you're buying 1.5L bottles from a supermarket.

The environmental cost of those bottles isn't just the plastic itself. It's the production, the transport, the cooling, and then whatever happens after you throw it away (most of it doesn't get recycled properly regardless of what the bin says).

A reusable bottle eliminates most of this. Not all, it has its own production footprint, but the breakeven point is reached after a relatively small number of uses, somewhere in the range of 10 to 40 uses depending on the material, according to lifecycle analysis research on reusable versus single-use containers.

A bottle you actually carry reaches that breakeven point fast. A bottle sitting on your kitchen counter doesn't. The math is simple, but the habit isn't. What makes it work is removing the decision entirely and a bottle that folds flat in your pocket does exactly that.

Why a Reusable Foldable Water Bottle Answers the Design Question Nobody Asks

When people think about sustainable products, the conversation tends to focus on materials. Is it stainless steel? Is it BPA-free? Is the packaging recycled cardboard?

These things matter, but they're downstream of a more fundamental question: will you use it?

Foldable silicone bottles are not the most glamorous sustainability story. They're not a dramatic intervention. But they remove the single biggest reason people fail to use their reusable bottle, which is that carrying an empty rigid container is annoying and takes space you need for other things.

That's a design problem. And it's worth solving it.

A small practical note

If you're switching from buying bottled water regularly, the honest comparison is not the upfront cost of the bottle versus zero. It's the cost of the bottle versus what you're currently spending on bottled water. In Madrid, a 500ml bottle from a kiosk costs roughly €1.50 to €2. If you're buying two of those a week on commutes, that's €150 to €200 a year.

A foldable bottle costs around €5. The maths aren't complicated.

FAQ

Is a foldable silicone bottle actually more sustainable than a stainless steel one? It depends how you use it. Stainless steel has a higher production footprint but lasts longer. Silicone is lighter and more likely to be carried daily, which means more uses and a lower per-use impact. The most sustainable bottle is whichever one you actually use.

Does silicone biodegrade? No, silicone does not biodegrade in the way organic materials do. It is, however, durable enough to last years with normal use, and some manufacturers offer recycling programmes. It's a better choice than single-use plastic but not a perfect one.

How many uses does it take for a reusable bottle to offset its production? Lifecycle analyses vary, but most put the breakeven point between 10 and 50 uses compared to single-use plastic bottles, depending on the material and how the comparison is calculated. At daily use, you hit that in a matter of weeks.

Can I recycle a silicone bottle when it wears out? Standard recycling bins don't accept silicone. Some brands have take-back schemes, and specialist silicone recycling exists in some cities. Check with your local waste service or the brand you bought from.

Where can I buy a foldable water bottle online in Spain? Look for shops that offer shipping within Spain in a few days. Divi ships across Spain with delivery in 2 to 4 days.

Why you should switch to a foldable water bottle A reusable foldable water bottle sounds like a small thing.
